Raketkanon kondigt afscheid aan: ‘We blijven allemaal muziek maken’

De Belgische rockband Raketkanon heeft via een persbericht en posts op sociale media aangekondigd dat ze ermee ophoudt. Het kwartet speelt dit najaar wel nog een pak clubshows en staat ook volgende festivalzomer nog op de planken.

Dat de laatste tien jaar buiten alle verwachtingen waren, schrijven Pieter De Wilde, Lode Vlaeminck, Jef Verbeeck en Pieter-Paul Devos in hun afscheidstekst. Dat ze met Raketkanon een manier hadden gevonden om iets te creëren op een unieke manier, maar dat ze zelf voelen dat het einde van de rit nadert, zeven jaar na hun debuut #RKTKN1. Raketkanon maakte al snel naam voor zichzelf met goeie songs – die allemaal een voornaam als titel hebben – en sterke liveoptredens en een krachtig geluid. ‘Raketkanon heeft een heel typerende, unieke ritmesectie. De drums zijn relatief eenvoudig, gebaseerd op grooves in combinatie met baslijnen die Lode op synthesizer speelt’, legde drummer Pieter De Wilde ooit uit in Knack Focus. ‘Gitaar, bas en drums volgen hetzelfde patroon, en daarover zingt Pieter-Paul een melodie, vaak in een ander ritme. Dat is, in een notendop, de stuwende kracht.’

Met hun zwanenzang zet Raketkanon een reeks verder van Belgische gitaarbands die vrij recent hun afscheid aankondigden, waaronder Customs, Diablo Blvd, Freaky Age, Madensuyu, The Hickey Underworld en The Van Jets. Toch wees er vooraf weinig op hun afscheid: afgelopen zomer speelde de groep nog een goed onthaald concert op Pukkelpop en ook hun laatste plaat #RKTKN3 kreeg uitstekende recensies. ‘Sensationeel, hoe deze heren met een conventionele rockopstelling zoveel duisternis en ontij uitstoten’, schreef Knack Focus bijvoorbeeld.

De fans hoeven nog niet meteen afscheid te nemen van Raketkanon. De groep kondigt samen met haar afscheid nog één Europese clubtournee aan, die in ons land de AB Box en de Vooruit aandoet, en belooft ook nog één festivalzomer op pad te gaan. Daarna is het afgelopen, maar de vier leden plannen wel allemaal nog muziek te blijven maken. Zo is Pieter-Paul Devos ook de zanger van Kapitan Korsakov.

Those people who went along on our ride – be it in the sweaty and ecstatic crowd of a live show or in a bedroom in front of a laptop – we owe a lot of gratitude.

Assessing that ride we had, we find ourselves arriving at the end.
We have made three albums we’re all very proud of, went to the most beautiful places, met the most heartwarming people, and now feel like we have succeeded in artistically expressing ourselves sufficiently in this capacity. (Which is arguably the primary reason to make music in the first place)

To all the people who showed us their love, worked with us, introduced us to their friends, bought our albums, stole our albums, carried us over their heads, showed us their sincerity. To everyone who helped us out when we were lost – geographically or otherwise, everyone who sang along to our non-existent lyrics, everyone who can acknowledge that there can be no competition in artistic expression; it would not have been the same without you.

You have enriched our lives.

So this is where Raketkanon ends. We will do one more club tour between now and February 2020, and are working on a couple of festivals in 2020 which will be announced as soon as possible.

All four of us will continue making music. We are ending this project in peace and love among and for each other, and wish you nothing but exactly that.
