Oscars 2011: ‘The King’s Speech’ wint Beste Regie en Beste Film

Tom Hooper, Natalie Portman, Colin Firth en ‘The King’s Speech’ gaan de analen in als dé grote overwinnaars van de 83ste Academy Awards.

Tom Hooper heeft voor ‘The King’s Speech’ zijn eerste Oscar als regisseur in ontvangst mogen nemen. Hij verslaat daarmee grote concurrent David Fincher en zijn ‘The Social Network’. Verschillende critici tipten die laatste als mogelijke winnaar, niet in het minst omwille van zijn indrukwekkende palmares (met ‘Se7en’ als pronkstuk). ‘The King’s Speech’ ontving eerder al de Oscar voor het beste originele scenario.

Geen verrassingen in de categorie Beste Actrice: Natalie Portman mocht de prijs mee naar huis nemen voor haar rol in ‘Black Swan’. Een zichtbaar ontroerde Portman bedankte in haar speech regisseur Darren Aronofsky, die ze ‘a fearless leader and visionary’ noemde. Ook haar vriend kreeg een vermelding. Portman ontmoette danser Benjamin Millepied op de set van ‘Black Swan’. De actrice zei dat haar vriend haar ‘de rol van haar leven bezorgt.’ Portman is zwanger van haar eerste kind.

En ook in de categorie Beste Acteur in een hoofdrol haalde de favoriet het. Colin Firth won de Oscar na zijn tweede opeenvolgende nominatie (vorig jaar was dat voor ‘A Single Man’).

Steven Spielberg himself kreeg de eer om de laatste Oscar uit te reiken en gaf de award van Beste Film aan ‘The King’s Speech’. Sommigen speculeerden dat voor één keer de winnaars van de regie en beste film misschien wel eens zouden kunnen verschillen, omdat ‘The Social Network’ en ‘The King’s Speech’ zo aan elkaar gewaagd waren, maar daar kwam niets van in huis. Van de twaalf nominaties verzilvert het koningsdrama van Tom Hooper vier prijzen: Beste Regie, Beste Film, Beste Scenario en Beste Acteur in een hoofdrol voor Colin Firth.

Zoals verwacht is ‘The King’s Speech’ dus de grote overwinnaar van de Oscars. Maar met vier beeldjes in totaal werd het geen overdonderende prestatie. In de schaduw van Tom Hooper en Colin Firth wist ook ‘Inception’ vier Academy Awards bij elkaar te sprokkelen, maar die kwamen vooral uit de meer technische disciplines. ‘The Social Network’ van regisseur David Fincher bleef steken op drie trofeeën.

Maar de uitgesproken verliezer van de avond was ‘True Grit’ van de broers Coen. De western slaagde er niet in om ook maar één van de tien verworven nominaties om te zetten in een overwinning. En ook ‘127 Hours’ met presentator James Franco in de hoofdrol scoorde slecht, met nul op zes.
