Op hun debuut tuurt zangeres Elizabeth Stokes diep in de spiegel: ‘I have been a mess of late/ And you wouldn’t be impressed‘, zingt ze in You Wouldn’t Like Me.‘But I’ve got something on my chest/ I’ve been stressed of late/ But please don’t try to guess what’s on my mind/ You probably won’t like what you’ll find.’ Intussen ontspint zich vinnige gitaarrock genre The Breeders of Magnapop twee decennia geleden. Het sarcasme is echter helemaal van deze tijd: ‘You’re in my brain taking up space/ I need for remembering pins and to take out the bins/ And that one particular film that actor was in’, klinkt het Weezergewijs in Happy Unhappy. Sympathiek.
