‘Montage Of Heck’ toont de brede muzikale smaak van de nog onbekende Kurt Cobain. Hij was toen 19 jaar. Van Nirvana was nog geen sprake.

De nog volstrekt onbekende Kurt Cobain was 19 toen hij de mixtape ‘Montage Of Heck’ vastlegde op een viersporen-cassetterecorder, en toont meteen ook de gevarieerde muzikale smaak van het latere grunge-icoon. Het gaat om stukjes muziek van George Michael, Daniel Johnston, Frank Zappa, Simon & Garfunkel, Cher, Iron Maiden en een pak andere namen die hij in huis had op vinyl. De mixtape bevat ook fragmenten uit radioprogramma’s en hoogst bizarre soundeffecten.

De eigenaar van de mixtape heeft de geluidscollage naar eigen zeggen in 1986 gekregen, uit handen van Cobain. Een jaar vóór Nirvana uit de grond werd gestampt.
